Which lash extensions should you use on different lash types?

Choosing the right lash extensions for your clients' natural lashes can be tricky, but with this guide, you’ll find it easier than ever!

Just like we all have different hair textures, our lashes vary too—believe it or not! As a lash tech, you’ll encounter various lash textures: fine, curly, coarse, and soft. Dealing with a full set of curly natural lashes can be tricky, but this guide is here to help you!

Which lash extensions should you use on fine lashes?

For clients with fine natural lashes, always opt for lighter weight lash extensions ranging from 0.05mm to 0.07mm and keep the length as short as possible. This provides volume without straining the natural lashes. Flat lashes are perfect for naturally fine eyelashes; despite having the same diameter as classic lash extensions, they are lighter in weight.

Which lash extensions should you use on curly lashes?

For clients with curly lashes, avoid using curls like D and DD, as this can create an overdramatised and unappealing look and may irritate your clients’ eyes. Instead, choose a more natural curl such as C or CC to match the natural lash curve. This will look more flattering and ensure optimal retention.

Which lash extensions should you use on coarse lashes?

Coarse lashes have a thicker diameter and a rougher texture compared to fine lashes. They are typically more robust and can hold most lash styles and retain lash extensions well—perfect for volume lashes. This hair type can vary in curl pattern and may be straight, wavy, or curly.

Which lash extensions should you use on soft lashes?

Soft lashes struggle to hold long lash extensions, so for clients with very soft natural lashes, always opt for a shorter length to avoid stressing the natural lash and causing damage. Using B or J curls in shorter lengths will complement the eyes without being overpowering. You typically encounter soft lashes in older people who don’t always want dramatic volume sets, which makes our job easier!

Choosing the right lash extensions can be tricky, but with this guide, you’ll find it easier than ever! Tailor your approach to each unique lash type—fine, curly, coarse, or soft—and watch your clients leave with confidence and satisfaction.
